HSBC is offering savers a 12-month CD rate of 2.30%APY. Ideal for short-term investors, this 12-month CD rate is available online and for a limited time only. The minimum opening balance to earn the stated rate is $1,000.

Please note that a penalty may be imposed for early withdrawal so it’s best that extra funds be allocated for this purpose otherwise the interest income will just eat up your penalty for withdrawal.

The rate offered is accurate as of March 22, 2009 but the bank may change it at anytime.

Update: September 9, 2011

More than two (2) years after, HSBC’s rate sheet shows that its 12 month CD is now only 0.20%APY. It however still requires the same amount of $1,000 as minimum opening deposit. Remember that this rate is offered online.

However, HSBC is also offering a 12 month CD or a 1 year plus one day CD which you can open at a branch or by telephone deposit. The APY for this 12 month CD is currently at the same rate as its online rate of 0.20%APY. It likewise requires $1,000 minimum opening deposit.

Citibank 12 month CD 2.50%APY

Update 9/20/11:

Citibank’s 12 month CD is now 0.25%APY. It was 2.25% more than two (2) years ago or in May 2009. A big decline of 2.00%APY. Citibank highest CD rate offer is 1.01%APY for a 5 year term CD.

Update 5/12/09:

The 12 month CD rate offered by Citibank is down. It is now 2.25%APY. The rate change took effect on 5/12/09. It was 2.50% in March 2009. Minimum opening deposit required by the bank is still $500.
